GDC

I’m looking through some of the first stuff to come across from GDC and as ever I wish I was there to experience it first hand. I did apply to go over as a volunteer this year but I recieved an email saying that they had filled all the volunteer spots – a good week before the deadline. Forgive me, but surely it would make more sense to follow the SIGGRAPH model and process the applications after the deadline in order to ensure you get the best possible people. I’m sure that comes across as sour grapes (and admittedly it is slightly, like I say I really want to attend GDC) and I might not have been accepted anyway, but the system seems flawed to me.

Anyway, gripe over, I’ve just watched the video for ARhhrrr, an augmented reality game from Georgia Tech Augmented Environments Lab and the Savannah College of Art and Design. It’s really quite impressive and I can see a lot of potential in both the technology and the gameplay. I especially like the use of real world objects (Skittles) to influence the game, I think this could lead to some really fun experimentation on the part of the player if they weren’t aware of what the effects of the items they incorporated into the game space would be, it sort of reminded me of the old Barcode Battler system in that respect.

I’m also getting more and more interested in Blackrock Studios new game, Split/Second. It’s looking like it’s coming together quite nicely and I’m looking forward to seeing how the environment destruction influences the game. The game sort of comes across as combination of Burnout and an extreme version of Mario Kart for some reason, not that that’s a bad thing!
